Charles McClain served as president of Truman State University for nearly 20 years (1970-1989), and his vision and leadership helped Truman refocus its mission, transforming it into a highly selective, public liberal arts and sciences university. McClain passed away on April 9, 2015.

- President Charles J. McClain Scholarship
This scholarship, which was created to honor Charles McClain’s many years of service to Truman State University, is awarded to an outstanding incoming student by the Admissions Office at Truman.
Make a gift - General John J. Pershing Scholarship
Named after U.S. Army General and Truman alumnus John J. Pershing, this scholarship was established in 1972 under the direction of Charles McClain, who felt that the academic, full scholarship would open doors for students who might otherwise not have the opportunity to choose Truman. Pershing Scholars typically rank in the top 3% of their high school graduating class, exhibit strong leadership skills and community involvement, and are among the top scorers on standardized tests for high school achievement and college admissions.

This scholarship was created in 1989 by the Association of Black Collegians with the aid of Charles McClain and rewards underrepresented students at Truman who demonstrate campus and community involvement with organizations such as the ABC.
